Shou Sumiyaki has been in Melbourne for a very long time. They served high quality M10 meat even way before than any other restaurant starts serving them in their restaurant. Specialising in Japanese BBQ and also high quality sashimi dishes. I have been a customer for a very long time now. At least 7 or 8 years.

The restaurant it self is a bit old considering the age, still look decent with romantic dim lighting. Table seatings and tatami seatings. It could be hectic and a bit noisy due to their busy environment. The staff speaks decent english but some could be improved. We are invited to Shou Sumiyaki to try their additional new menu, now they have Imported from Japan meat such as Hida Beef and Kagoshima. We were given $150 voucher to enjoy the night.



Salmon Belly Sashimi (5pcs/19.9). One of the highlight of the night. Generous portions of salmon belly sashimi, cut not too thick but nicely melts in your mouth. I always love the companion of something fresh with Japanese BBQ meat. It gives me a nice break from the hot oily meat.

Premium Kobe Wagyu Beef M10 Short Ribs (300g/$69.9). This set has three different cuts of M10 Kobe. Also good value for money cause you get 300g for $70 while if you pick your own different cut of the same quality meat the price would ranges from $34-$39 for 100g. The meat comes with sesame sauce and roasted wasabi. Love the combination with meat, it enhanced the quality of the meat and harness the meat flavour even more.


Hida Beef Slice (100g/$65). This set also comes with sesame oil, roasted wasabi seeds and truffle salt. All that comes together with the meat, delicious. Melts in your mouth. But I do think the cut is slightly a bit too thick and because we are ask to grill the meat on the side, it takes a bit longer than the 15 seconds on each side ruler,




Hot Udon ($14.9). My son loves the udon, comes in a really big bowl with super generous dashi broth. Perfect for the cold winter night. Overly generous seaweed that I love so much. Recommended for the side dish.



At the end the owner give us one ice cream cone to take away for my kid. It's a mix flavour between sakura and green tea. That's a nice touch to end the experience. Overall, there was a time where Shou sumiyaki is the top of Japanese BBQ game in Melbourne but so much has change in Melbourne food scene, now they have so many competitor. It's still one of the best but innovation and creativity needed to be implemented regularly to maintain their modern touch.
