Piatella (Invited)

Piatella is a multicultural cafe located in the main street of Glen Waverly. The idea comes from a family holiday, 2 years before  the cafe open. All the food in Europe inspired the very idea of this cafe. Rather than picking one special city with one special speciality, we want to bring it all to Melbourne in one spacious, family friendly cafe.

I passed by this cafe many many many times before and never crossed my mind to enter cause it looks like any other traditional Melbournian cafe but oh boy, I was wrong. First, it is so much bigger inside with warm brick interior. Perfect for family and kids, since they also have several high chairs and kids menu are available.

First thing first, ordering something for my baby. Kids Menu: Cheesy Pasta. They came in pretty fast, which I highly appreciated cause my baby is really hungry after a whole day in childcare. He ate it pretty fast and finish more half of it and it is a very big portions. I also have a taste and no wonder he did that, cause even as an adult, I would love to eat it. Very rich and cheesy with silky smooth pasta. Yum!

Grilled Calamari Salad - Grilled calamari served on a bed of wild roquette, fresh herbs and oregano, Roma tomatoes, avocado and a zesty lemon dressing. I don't normally prefer grilled calamari rather than fried but in this dish it worked. Small cuts of calamari with fresh acidic dressings and generous leafy greens. A nice way to start a meal.

Pan-Fried Gnocchi - pulled lamb shoulder, cherry tomatoes, roquette, edamame beans, dukkah, sage crumble, Danish feta cheese ($28). My husband is a big fan of gnocchi, so whenever it is on the menu, he can't help to order it. Pan-fried gnocchi is an elevated version of gnocchi, fluffy pillowy gnocchi seared to have a slight crispiness on the outside. The dish has a slight Middle Eastern flare to it with dukkah, lamb and sage but mixed nicely with fresh tomatoes.

500g Beef Short Ribs ($34). This is the main star of our dinner and we want back to Piatella as soon as possible. Super melting in your mouth meat, barbecued in a custom made Manhorne smoker. Smoked with hickory wood, which I believe is the best wood for smoking beef. The beef comes in with creamy coleslaw, corn on the cob, pickles and super crispy beef battered chips and one of the best onion rings around. On top of all that, the two dipping sauce was simply addictive.

Matcha Green Tea Crepes - matcha green tea mousse, fresh strawberries, sesame almond nut mix, vanilla white chocolate ganache ($14.5) and Oreo Cheesecake ($9.5). The only disappointment from this place is the green tea crepe cause besides the matcha mousse, the crepes it self was basically over sweet white chocolate ganache. I wish the ganache was also matcha then it would be a blast. Oreo cheesecake comes to the rescue, love it. Not too much oreo but you can still taste the cookies and cream component but the cheesy flavour is still dominant enough to be called cheesecake. Delicious.
