Ton & Co (Invited)

Ton & Co is a modern Japanese Tonkatsu place that Melbourne needs. It's quite hard to find tonkatsu specialise in Melbourne. The only one I know is the amazing Gypsy & Pig. Now, suddenly it's started popping up around Melbourne, slowly but sure and Ton & Co is one of them. They are pork focused restaurant, serving high quality pork meat. All of their meat is prepared fresh in house, most with further curing and ageing process around 4 days. To add extra tenderness and juiciness as well as developed the depth of flavour and no porky smell.

Started with something small;Ox Tongue Skewers ($12/3pcs). I normally like ox tounge to be so thin and crispy but this cube ox tongue it's actually not bad at all. It's so tender that it melts in your mouth and very well seasoned too. Salty but not over powering.

“Tonkatsu” is a Japanese fried pork cutlet dish. Pork Striploin with Japanese Curry ($23). The original tonkatsu is not recommended by the chef on the day cause of the quality so we opted for the striploin instead. The first bite was amazing, super crunchy then tender meat with rich curry sauce. Super delicious, must try and definitely one of the best tonkatsu around Melbourne at the moment.

Signature Pork Ribeye Steak - 400gm bone-on, cured and aged pork ribeye, onion relish, shoyu beurre blanc, mustard, side salad ($28). This is also recommended by the chef him self. The meat was so tender, juicy and fat just burst in your mouth then the sweetness comes in and take over. Oh my, this is the definition of high quality pork steak.

Poached Salmon - Honey miso glaze, seaweed crust, shiitake mushroom broth, sake steamed leeks ($28). My baby came with me, so we were looking for something to feed him. The poached salmon melts in your mouth instantly, the meat was so soft that it disappears straight away. Umami flavours clearly run deep in this dish, in the salmon dish and the broth.

Matcha Cheese Cake with Hojicha Ice Cream ($9). It ended with a nice note as well, even thought not as spectacular as their savoury dish. The matcha taste was strong but the cheesecake was a touch too dense for me. Their hojicha ice cream was amazing though, just the way I like it. Strong but not too sweet.
