Be The Duck (Invited)

Be The Duck is Chef Tom Skocic first solo venture after 18 years of experience in hospitality industry, including the well known Matteo's and Hare & Grace. He first heard "Be The Duck" from the head chef at one of his previous work place when they are fully booked out and under staff, it means calm on the surface but madly paddling underneath.

I apparently arrived on the cafe on a bad day. They don't have enough staff cause some of them call in sick and Tom, left alone in the front house with one chef at the back. Yup, it's suiting that he and the chef be like the duck. They keep it calm and do everything they can.

The food takes a long time to appear on our table and when it come, this dish comes with a mistake. I went in with my muslim friend and she asked to exclude the bacon and change it with mushroom. But what come to our table is the original version. Apparently, they mixed up the dish with the other bloggers table. They get our mushroom and we get the bacon but later on Tom did bring us the mushroom after we told him what happen. Truffled Sweet Potato & Corn Fritters - dukkha coated son in law egg, smashed avocado, bacon, corn tuille ($19) and mushroom. The sweet potato and corn fritters was amazingly good, soft lack of crunchiness but we get that from the dukkha coated perfectly cooked egg. Even though it's late, the mushroom is so delicious.

Beef Sirloin ($6) and Broccolini ($4). I was so surprise when this dish arrived. It was so plain just blend over cooked meat and blend broccolini. I wish they added more flavouring or sauce or anything to make the dish better. I don't mind if they charge more for some more flare on the dish.

Banana Blueberry Matcha Hotcake - banana, coconut custard, seasonal berries, pure maple, super seed granola ($17). This dish also surprise me cause it's different than all the other hot cake cause it was served big and flat. The taste was sweet, light and very enjoyable, especially with the pure maple.

They are pretty accomodating to me and baby, that I highly appreciated. I also do love their small courtyard at the back. Perfect for summer.
