Vapiano (Invited)

Vapiano has multiple branches across Australia; in Brisbane, Garden City, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney. This winter, Vapiano will launch a winter set to warm us up during dinner time with some additions to the menu. We were invited to their Collins St branch - spacious place, easy to find and located in CBD - perfect.

We started with drinks; Spice Martini - the spice martini whose name will be changed after our tasting - tasted great. There was shredded chocolate on top and nuts. There was salty pretzel as topping as well - but the saltiness was a bit off from the entire drink. Squids Fist Sangiovese - a red wine perfect to pair with your main dishes. The tastes was a bit sweet but I kind of like “sweet” wine so I might be biased.

Prosciutto Bruschetta - a humble yet very nice way to start the course. Freshly cut baguette still very soft inside. Topped with fresh rockets and prosciutto slices and generous bits of young mozzarellas. I like my bread to be drizzled with olive oils that simply give you a little bit of fragrance of the olives. Simply enjoyed it.

Tomato Soup - we actually did not get to try this one. We got small portions of our favorite funghi risotto instead topped with thin cheese on top. Just perfect homey food for winter :)

Pasta Puttanesca - tomato based sauce pasta with tomatoes, olive oil, anchovies, olives, capers and garlic. Homey pasta with generous portion. Could not taste the anchovies in the beginning since they were served in whole piece instead of making it into bits so that the anchovies are equally spread inside the dish. But overall it was good.

Pizza Vesuvio - oven pizza with tomato base topped with capsicum, stirred fried ground beef, capsicum, freshly cut shallot (well you may opt for without shallot if you dont like it) and the white sauce. If you prefer to have a fresher kind of pizza, you may try to drizzle lemon on top of this pizza. For me, I like it both with or without the lemon. The beef was a bit dried and overcooked for me and too salty as well. The beef should be in bigger chunk so that it gives you better texture when you eat it. The taste of the pizza itself was okay but it was not my favorite.

Nutella Dessert Pizza - it is basically a pizza drenched in nutella sauce topped with strawberries, bananas and shredded cadburry. The taste is good and nothing can beat nutella sauce. But size wise it’s a bit generous, especially if you have eaten mains and would like appetizers. For me, it would be better if the size is smaller with slight price adjustment and you might add ice cream for another topping options as well to balance the sweetness from the Nutella sauce.

Winter is the perfect seasons for a warm, heavier, richer taste and certainly much more carbs to withstand the weather. Italian cuisines is definitely one of my top choice for winter comfort food.
