Abacus (Invited)

Abacus recently opened in South Yarra. It's an open, simple and high ceiling restaurant with lots of trees facing the busy Chapel Street - easy to spot and easy to fall in love with. The interior is simple and cozy with bars and DJs. Nice place to hang out eating some tapas with wines or pale ales.

At the event, we were greeted with drinks and nice music. The crowds were awesome and the wait staffs were really great and welcoming despite all the crowd. Sometimes on a launching event, there were barely food around but I was really happy at Abacus. Cause they certainly displayed and served various kind of dishes with generous serving.

PIZZAS! They were made in traditional oven and the pizza chef uses his own homemade flour. The pizzas taste great and they came in various toppings and most of them taste great. For vegans, they also have vegan pizza. Abacus gets you covered :) They have this cauliflower pizza with beetroot, cashew, spinach and capsicum. My personal favourites out of all pizzas are the classic tomato with mozarella, peninsula mushrooms with native saltbush and thyme, and parmesan bechamel, pumpkin and zucchini pickled. Most of the pizzas have the same dough base except for the vegan one, they have that nice crispy crust on the outside but soft inside and simply delicious. Out of all, maybe the pancetta, crackling and red capsicum jam did not work for me. The capsicum jam a bit too overwhelming for me, especially I’m not a big fan of capsicum here.

They also served various dishes to be shared such as smoked jalapenos, octopus tentacle, smoked capsicum and feta, slow cooked pork bellly, croquettes with cheese, and smoked sashimi.**-not too sure about portion wise because this was a launch party** The jalapenos was pan fried and with cheese inside, then smoked and sprinkled with olives afterwards. Not a big fan of this jalapeno, but it was a nice. The octopus tentacles, verde, lime aioli, chorizo and wasabi leaf. It was so good. The octopus crispy on the outside but very soft on the inside - so easy to chew and taste great. The pork belly, mushroom, seaweed butter, parsnip - not that I can actually taste or actually eat any mushroom or parsnip there, the pork belly was so nice. The croquettes speck+gruyere, parsley root + cheese inside - simple bite snacks that really go well with any drinks. Crispy and nice. Smoked sashimi kingfish with enoki mushroom - smoked. - not too bad but not a big fan. Looks fancy with the smoke and stuffs, but taste mediocre. Smoked cauliflower, it’s simply cauliflower - grilled and smoked.

Then we have desserts; starting with Croissants: LOVE IT! Super crunchy on the outside and soft inside. Buttery and taste great. The chocolate croissant also tastes great. I will definitely comeback for the croissant and maybe try their coffee.

The opening night was simply fab. Full of people, lively crowd and certainly fun. The highlight of the night was of course the foods and drinks - not only they came almost like freeflow, they taste great.
