Paper Plate just opened on mid February at Bridge Road. They are serving shared plates Vietnamese influenced Asian fusion dining with full bar available. Paper Plate pride them self in being pet friendly, kid friendly, serving vegetarian options and providing free wi fi.

I was contacted by their owner, Dan, to come on their grand opening night and have a taste on their dishes. We started the night with Viet Passion - vodka, orange liqueur, passionfruit, lychees, Vietnamese mints, lime ($17), Avocado Smoothies ($6) and Custard Apple ($6). The cocktail was pretty refreshing but I love the custard apple smoothies the most which is rare to find in Melbourne.






We ordered a range of appetisers; Seared Scallop with Betel Leaf - herbs, spicy green mango salad topped w/ crispy baby shrimps ($5ea), Caramelised Chicken wings - nuoc mam, spring onion, chilli and fried shallot ($9) and Imperial Spring Rolls - prawn, pork wrapped in baby oak, fresh herbs, green papaya & pickled carrot w/ nuoc cham ($4ea). Honestly, I was impressed with their appetisers cause I do think they are all good. Starting with perfectly cooked scallop then super tasty wings and crunchy rolls with tender fillings. Yum!










Then they have on the go menu which mean for individual not for share;Lemongrass & Chilli Chicken - capsicum, onion, broccoli serve with rice ($16). I was expecting stronger lemongrass flavour but sadly it was pretty light.



This was the highlight of the night. Slow Cooked Beef Short Rib - watercress, red onion, mango, bean sprout w/ ginger dressing ($33) with sweet potato as a side. The beef was super tender, the flavour was rich and the sauces immersed to the deepest depths of the meat. Perfectly match with rice instead of chips, don't get me wrong the sweet potato chips was crunchy and sweet with a touch of salt.



We ended the dinner with;Coconut Pannacotta & Passion Fruit w/ crumbled topping ($12), Creme Caramel - Vietnamese coffee syrup and fresh seasonal fruits ($12) and Jack fruit sorbet ($3/scoop). Our favourite was the pannacotta cause of the soft texture similar with mousse but the coconut flavour was prominent enough to make the passion fruit shine and the crumbles complete the texture. Jack fruit sorbet is something unique and rarely found in Melbourne, the jackfruit flavour was clearly there but not too strong which I like. The let down was creme caramel, the flavour was nice not too sweet but the texture was too dense for my liking.








The service was a bit up and down but it's understandable since they are just open. Some of the staff were still confuse and lack of knowledge of the menu and the restaurant it self but there was one staff, who was very friendly and knowledgeable about the whole thing. She also try to handle all the situation professionally, because of her the dinner ended up smoothly. Overall, I was happy with the visit.
