Donovans is located in one of three original bathing house built in 1920 on St Kilda. In 1997, Gail and Kevin Donovan together with their partners Jeannie Donovan Fisher and Dick Fisher transform the bathing house to a homey, natural lighting with beautiful outside terrace over looking the beach. There are also private dining room for special occasions. Donovans menu is influenced by Gail and Kevin's modern cooking with Head chef Emma D'Alessandro Italian influence.

I have been wanting to visit Donovans for years but my husband always insisted that we have been there before but turns out he was wrong so to make that up we went for Valentine's dinner. The restaurant it self was spacious, bright with natural lighting, airy and beautiful on day time and night time with beach view in front of it.

My husband love his gnocchi so as soon as he see gnocchi on the menu, he went for it. Handmade gnocchi with Australian bug meat, prawn bisque, tomato and lemon pangrattato ($38). The gnocchi was well made, al dente but the star of the dish was the prawn bisque. It was rich but not overwhelming, full of seafood flavour but not fishy just simply a nice dish.

I, my self was aiming for the Queensland leader prawns grilled with oregano and chilli served with house chips, tossed cos leaves and condiments ($60/market price) with onion rings as a side ($12). It was a beautiful pure prawn dish just with enough seasonings to enhance the prawn flavour. The surprise comes from the onion rings, it was the most delicious crunchy, tasty onion rings ever. I can't stop eating it.

We were pretty full so we decided on a light dessert to share; Frozen honey parfait with caramelised apricots, orange streusel, pistachio cake and moscato jelly ($22). It was a light but not my favourite dessert.

The service was a friendly, professional from the beginning to the end even started from when I called them for reservations. The overall food was simple but the ingredients manage to shine through, maybe next time I'll try their bombe alaska since I saw almost all table ordered them.
