Black Star Pastry started in Sydney opened since 2008 in Newton then soon followed by two other branches in Rosebarry and Sydney CBD. Christopher the owner and pastry chef previously worked at pastry chef at Claude's, Bel Mondo and the world famous Quay. Finally, after lots of tease over the year during Night Noodle Market in November, Black Star Pastry finally arrived in Melbourne for 3 months at Cafe Italia, just a lil bit off Lygon St.

I heard the news from one of my friend who is a friend of Chris in Sydney that Black Star Pastry was trying to look for a place permanently in Melbourne then not long after they announced the pop up. I guess they haven't find the perfect permanent place so they decided to start with a pop up but either way I screamed with joy cause it means the most Instagrammable cake, that beautiful Strawberry Watermelon Cake is here in Melbourne. No need to fly to Sydney or to wait for Night Noodle Market in November.

The famous Strawberry Watermelon Cake is full of light almond dacquoise, not overly sweet, refreshing fresh watermelon & strawberries, a bit of crunchiness from pistachio and delicate rose flavour. I can eat the whole slice on my own so does my mom and her friend. Both of them never tasted this cake before and they love it so much. My friend in Sydney told me they sold over 5000 slices of Strawberry Watermelon cake in NSW alone and they make over $20000 profit each week.

There are also served other cakes such Black Sesame Yuzu, Pistachio Lemon Zen Cake, Orange Cake with Persian Figs, Egg Tart and many more. I also tried the black sesame yuzu cake which has the same lightness and freshness as the strawberry watermelon cake with a slight sourness. Their Orange Cake was dense but not too heavy or too sour and has a lovely aromatic taste.

Since, they are open in Melbourne, the cakes always sold out before the closing time. So better come early to be safe and the cake best to be eaten on the premises since it will only last around 20-30 minutes especially in this hot weather.
