Legacy (Invited)

Legacy is a well known and popular small cafe located in Camberwell area, around 13-17 minutes walk from Camberwell station but reachable by tram. Parking could be a challenge since there are only street parking available and even on weekdays it could get pretty busy and there are very limited private table so the chance are you'll be seated in their long communal table. Legacy belongs to a large family of cafe's such as Penta, Tinker, MOB and Temperance.

This review is a combination of two visit; The first time; I was looking forward to dine in at Legacy and my mom was in town so it's the perfect chance to try it since she loves Penta so much so I figured she will like Legacy too. The interior was simple decorated with red brick walls and wooden furnitures, busy a bit crowded and noisy. We started our meal with coffee and tea, the coffee was pretty bitter and too watery for my taste. Not long after my first visit, I got invited to Legacy and my representative came in for me. She ordered; Mr Brightside - dragonfruit, coconut infused yoghurt, chia seeds, mango, banana, honey (9.5), hot chocolate and chai. The smoothies taste so good and perfect for summer.

Pitaya Yoghurt Panna Cotta - cacao, dark chocolate, coconut granola, strawberries, passionfruit, grilled orange ($16). I'm a big fan of panna cotta but not this version. The panna cotta was very very dense, grainy and heavy. I don't think panna cotta should be that way and the rest of the ingredients was crunchy so it does not help the texture either. The pitaya flavour was okay but nothing outstanding.

Legacy Buttermilk Fried Chicken - charred corn slaw served on a brioche bun with mustard and sriracha mayo ($19). The chicken was really dry and over cooked, it needed much more sauce to help elevate the flavour cause the chicken it self was pretty blend. Sadly, the brioche was really dry too and lack of fluffiness and sweetness that usually a brioche have.

Sushi Bowl - salmon tataki, avocado, nori, watermelon, radish, pickled ginger, sushi rice, spring onions, shichimi chilli, fried egg ($21). This is the favourite out of all, perfect for summer and I can see why they are in trend. It was super fresh, light and cold dish just so good with the hot weather. The portion is pretty generous and I'm super in love with the combinations.

Sriracha & Chorizo Eggs Benny - two poached eggs, chorizo, avocado, sriracha hollandaise on kimchi potato hash ($19.5). We have seen this menu all over town but it was tasty, the eggs was perfectly cooked, creamy rich hollandaise on a unique kimchi potato hash. The portion may look small but it was fulfilling.

Hokey Pokey Hotcakes - honeycomb orange, ricotta, vanilla bean mascarpone, pomegranates and strawberries ($18). My first impressions was this dish was so beautifully plated. To my surprise the honeycomb went really well with the fruits, it balanced the acidity from the fresh fruit. The pancake it self was a bit crunchy on the outside which I like but remain soft on the inside.

The first visit was all about Legacy has been in my list for a long time so I really want to like it. Unfortunately it's disappointing. The service does not help either, the food takes really really long to arrived on our table but the staff keep rushing us and cleaning our table so we will leave sooner and they can get other people in. Out of all the siblings, I dislike Legacy the most. But the second visit completely changes the perspective. Kosta was super friendly and attentive through out the visit but not only the service, the food was above average as well and now I can see that Legacy belongs to the same awesome family as the others. I definitely would love to come back for that refreshing sushi bowl anytime.
