Food Social Global Feast M: Mexico (Invited)

Los Amates is an authentic Mexican restaurant located in Fitzroy area and has been around for a very long time. Owned by the Head Chef Arturo a real man with deep passion regarding his home cuisine as well as using the very best ingredients around to produce various of Mexican dishes. The menu mainly consist of Central Mexican dishes such as tacos, enchiladas and more. They also served a good varieties of classic Hispanic drinks such as Horchata as well as Sangria and of course Tequila.

This is that time of that month, the time I attended Food Social Global Feast event and this time, as you may guess it's M for Mexican food. In 2012, I stayed in USA for 6 months and mainly in California so I have taste a quite extensive range of good Mexican food and I like it. It's fresh, light but flavourful. Los Amates interior was separated into several small different rooms but all was decorated in colourful and fun theme. There were lot's of Mexican arts, paintings and of course loud Mexican music.

Entree; Tostada de ceviche - a crispy corn tortilla with ceviche or cactus for vegetarian options. Ceviche is one of my favourite Mexican food, especially prawn ceviche but this time it was fish and it was not bad at all. Everyone seems to be loving it as well as the cactus version, it taste like green beans but I find it a bit difficult to finish it cause of the dominant flavour of the cactus.

Our mains were Tequiza is a taco feast in Mexico where the fillings for the yaco and heated corn tortillas filled with different types os salsas and refined beans. Tinga al Don Arturo - chicken, tomato, onion, chipotle chilli, Conchinita Pibil - YUcatan style shredded pork with habanero onions, Barbacoa de Borrego - leg of lamb rubbed with spices, slow cooked in banana leaves, Beef Carne Asada - grilled beef steak with pasillia sauce and Nopales Asados and Mole Poblano - grilled cactus, onions, mole poblano, queso blanco.

Dessert; Pastel de Elote - warm sweet corn cake with cream, Pastel 3 Leches - sponge cake soaked in a mixture of three kinds of milk and Flab de la casa - creamy oven baked caramel custard tart. I honestly love flan but this one was a bit denser and I prefer it lighter but the pastel 3 leches was delicious. This were one of the best Mexican dessert I have tasted.

The service was friendly, attentive and accomodating. Chef Arturo also take some time to give us a demonstration of making tacos from scratch even though he was extremely busy on the night.
