The Hanging Gardens Restaurant & Grill (Invited)

The Hanging Gardens is known for the Mesopotamian "Ancient Iraq" and Mediterranean cuisine. Most of their dish has a long history way back to more than seven thousand years. Iraqi cuisine is something that we rarely find in Melbourne and Hanging Gardens enlarge Melbourne's multi cultural cuisine by serving traditional iraqi cuisine as well as a modern mediterranean cuisine.

When I was dining at Tokyo Teppanyaki, I was offered by the same marketing agency to dine in at the Hanging Gardens but I'm already back home in Indonesia on that date so my husband went in with his plus one. This review is based on his experience. The restaurant it self was spacey complete with it's own bar, perfect for party, functions or just a simple night out.

We started with an army of Cold Mezza; Trio Dips - Hummus, baba ghanouj, tzatziki served with mesopotamian bread. Tabouli - Parsley, onion, tomato, burghul. Fattoush - Radish, green caps, tomato, onion, cucumber, parsley and mint, crispy bread garnished with sumac and pomegranate sauce. I am a massive fans of dips especially tzatziki. However this time around, the quality and taste of the dips really blow my expectation away. The fluffiness of all the dips and the combination of different punching flavours really goes well with the softness of the traditional mesopotamian bread. I will be happy to have this for my dinner and nothing else!

Then various Warm Mezza started coming in; Bastarma - Homemade authentic sausage sliced and pan fried. Falafel - mixture of ground chickpeas, parsley, and spices. Lamb Bourak - specially prepared lamb mince mixed with onion, parsley, and spices. Trabulsi Kubba - burghal kubba thin shell and filled with lamb mince and spices. Hallal Kubba - rice, saffron, turmeric croquette stuffed with lamb mince mixed with onion, parsley, and spices. The star dish of the night so far goes to the Hallal Kubba, which is a minced lamb croquette. The outside is crunchy and the inside is so moist and full of flavour. The combination of mince lamb and spices really come out to give every bite a taste of authenticity. The Bastarma, homemade sausage is my second favourite, so simple yet so tasty.

As if that's not enough, the Mains started coming in; Erbit Kebab - specially prepared lamb mince mixed with herbs and spices. Lamb Tikka - specially prepared back strip lamb skewers. Chicken Tikka - specially prepared chicken breast skewers. Lamb Quozi - roasted lamb shank served with rice, nuts, and peas with spices. Mains are served and it is all about lamb tonight. From tasty erbit kebab to the fullness of lamb tikka and the richness of lamb quozi, it is a heaven for lamb lovers. My favourite for the night I have to give to Lamb Quozi, which is a lamb shank dish served with rice and peas. The lamb shank is so tender, it falls off the bonds easily. It is so juicy yet full of rich flavours which I enjoy with rice and a piece of bread. Lamb tikka is my next preferred dish, the meat is cooked in traditional Iraqi way which is well done, but it was still so tender and juicy. Again, a must for lamb lovers.

The last but not least, Dessert! Mixed Dessert Platter - Baklava, rahat lokum (turkish delight), zalebia (fried funnel cake). Dessert is served! All time favourite and mine as well is baklava. It is crispy and sweet and you can taste the authentic real baklava.

We also get to enjoy variety of drinks throughout the evening from fancy cocktails to innovative mocktails, they also served tea, coffee and many more.

Very pleasant experience indeed and would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is a lamb lover or want to try some unique Iraqi food. The restaurant was recently renovated and looks really nice and spacey, especially for family gathering enjoying a big feast.
