Black Toro v Free Wine App

Black Toro opened by Garen Maskal, Aret Arzadian and Sasoon Arzadian in 2012 with a purpose of providing a higher level of dining at the Kingsway strip. The menu is design for sharing and divided by small plates and larger plates. The Black Toro is Mexican/Spanish restaurant. I have traveled both to Mexico and Spain, sometimes I miss the food, tapas, wine and the festive atmosphere. That's why The Black Toro have been on my radar for quite some time.

I was contacted by Free Wine Apps to test their apps. They asked me to choose one restaurant from their list and given $100 voucher to dine in and test how the apps work. Lucky me, they have The Black Toro on their list. The apps was free to download on Android and iPhone. After the voucher arrived, I called Black Toro and make a reservations. They are pretty busy most of the times so I suggest to book online at their website to avoid disappointment.

Free wine apps is a new wine apps and they basically have a list of restaurant around Australia that will give you a free bottle of wine if you spent certain amount of money in their restaurant. I think it's a good idea because when you dine in, you'll spend the money anyway and from what I can see, the condition was pretty achievable for most of the restaurants since all of them have different variety of conditions.http://signup.free-wines.com/

The restaurant has a big graffiti on the wall which I love, a bar on the other side, chandelier and all the tables are black. It's classy and modern at the same time. The conditions to get a free wine at The Black Toro is to dine in on their $68 package which from my observations are higher than some other restaurants on the Free Wine apps list. When I showed the app to the staff, she does not really know what it is then she told her superior and all the problem was solved. We are allowed to choose between a white wine or red, I choose white, I klik order from the app and the order goes straight to the restaurant but just to be safe, do it in front of the staff. Our dining experience finally started. Because it was a chef menu, it was a complete mystery. We were only asked what we doesn't like or allergic and any preferences on the menu.

The first dish was Potato & Chorizo Croquette 2pcs - manchego cream ($9). It has a crunchy golden exterior and a smooth, salty inside.

Spanner Crab Tostada 3pcs - yuzu, smashed avocado & tobiko ($12). The crunchiness mixed with smooth creamy avocado topped with little popping tobiko on your mouth provided a well balanced dish.

Soft Shell Crab Taco 2pcs - blue corn tortilla, shredded cabbage, onion & sour cream ($14). The blue corn tortilla was unique, the soft shell crab was crunchy but I wish there was more seasonings to it.

Wagyu Beef Sliders 2pcs - caramelised onion, melted cheese, pickled jalapeno & ketchup ($14). The bun was fluffy and the beef patty was delicious, it was juicy and well seasoned with a little bit of spiciness to spiced up the flavour.

Spicy Pulled Pork Taco 2pcs - soft corn tortilla, shredded cabbage, onion & sour cream ($14). The pulled pork was so tender and the taste has a similar feeling with the beef patty.

Guajillp Glazed Pork Belly - toasted pumpkin seeds & herbs ($30) with steamed rice ($6). This is definitely my favourite dish at Black Toro. It was well marinated, rich with flavours, sweet with some crunchiness from the pumpkin seeds even though the rice was way too dried for my taste.

I was full then this monster dessert came in. Dessert Tasting Plate - deconstructed peanut butter cheesecake, caramel flan, chocolate brownie and coconut pannacotta ($35).

The service was friendly even though they are clearly very busy, I do think they need more staff. The bottle of wine came in a little bit late, in the middle of our starters course but I love the wine so much. After I drank my first sip, I quickly googled the wine for my future purchase. It's Sauvignon Blanc, the brand name was Map Maker, it's a New Zealand wine.

I would definitely use the Free Wine apps again in the future and I hope their list of restaurant grows over time cause right now it was pretty narrow which is understandable cause it's new. For a wine drinker, this app will benefit you tremendously. Who doesn't love a free bottle of wine to accompany your dinner?
